Khao Chamao Health Resort: ‘In The Pink’

July 19, 2010

UPDATE : 12 July 2010

Maneeya Dhammataree

Located within a lush mountainous area of Khao Chamao National Park about 30 kilometers from Rayong province’s city municipality, Khao Chamao Health Resort might seem a rather unlikely tourism destination on the surface. But when you examine its concept and offerings in closer detail, it soon becomes apparent that the resort represents a real boon for the growing number of health conscious tourists and travelers, both locally and worldwide.

A Sense of Balance
Khao Chamao Health Resort is an ideal destination in terms of providing guests with the chance to develop or build upon a balanced, healthy lifestyle. The construction, décor and the resort’s range of various activities aims to provide guests with a healthier and happier self.

A form of ‘declaration of intent’ is posted in the form of a printed statement in front of each house. This makes it clear to guests that smoking and drinking (alcohol) are prohibited within the confines of the resort. This declaration ensures that guests clearly understand the ground rules that will shape their stay at the resort, which are aimed at health promotion.

The accommodation at Khao Chamao Health Resort comprises 11 houses. Each house includes two, separate rooms, which are comfortable, but fairly Spartan. The décor is also relatively plain and simple and might not appear to be a key focus. Nevertheless, I noticed when further browsing through the resort that each building features specific colors, which pertain to the resort’s overall mission of providing a healthful environment for its guests.

A Colorful Approach
My accommodation featured a combination of blue ceilings and green walls, while I learned that other rooms had similar colorful contrasts, featuring various combinations of blue, green, indigo, orange, pink, violet and yellow. A helpful member of staff explained that the use of these color combinations could help to provide a form of balance in trying to repair malfunctions of a physical nature since colors respond to human electromagnetic waves.

According to the member of staff, blue can reduce the symptoms of migraine and insomnia, while green can help to treat stress and tension. Pink, on the other hand, is said to be effective in improving dysfunctional kidneys, while yellow is said to be good for your joints and can help in treating gout. Orange relates to the digestive system and violet is said to be beneficial for inflamed skin. You can discuss your personal requirements with a member of staff so that you can select the most appropriate room based on those needs.

Heavenly Scents
The second sensation that hits you on entering your room is a subtle aroma. In the room in which I stayed, a subtle scent of orange emanated from a dish of essential oils located on the bedside table. According to experts, orange aroma can help you relax, reduce blood pressure and improve the digestive system. The resort also uses eucalyptus, which is said to be refreshing, can improve concentration and creativity, as well as reducing infection due to aspects relating to aroma therapy.

Crystal Clear
Rather than opting to use delicate craft works, paintings or extravagant furniture, as many mainstream resorts do, Khao Chamao Health Resort puts crystal salt imported from the Himalayas to good use.

While it’s clear from its shape and form that crystal salt provides an eye-catching ornament, it also possesses more significant benefits. Comprising up to 84 different minerals, crystal salt is said to help clear the air, which can provide a form of relief for people suffering with allergies, asthma and sinus problems. The crystal is known also for being able to get rid of dust mites.

Moreover, the resort doesn’t pamper guests with aromatic baths or massage oils. Rather, each guest receives a packet of salt grains, which have been carefully prepared to provide the ideal compliment for a warm bath. The resort suggests taking this bath before turning in at night. These grains are said to provide a good deal of benefit in terms of producing a detoxifying effect.

Lots to do
Khao Chamao Health Resort also provides a wide range of activities for guests to get involved in, from batik and healthy cooking classes to music therapy, water aerobic or yoga programs. These classes are available on request and the tuition fee is just 100 baht (US$3) per person, per session.

More adventurous types might wish to check out the trek to Klong Hin Pleung Waterfall, which is located about 2-km from the resort and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Finally, I ought to mention the resort’s excellent organic cuisine. Since good health is the most important factor at Khao Chamao Health Resort, the menu only features fish, or dishes made from local fruits and vegetables. Although the restaurant refrains from using seasonings or other forms of additives, the chef has nevertheless managed to produce some extremely flavorful and delicious dishes.

Accommodation at Khao Chamao Health resort costs 1,350 baht (US$42) per person, per night on weekdays and 1,750 baht per person, per night on Saturdays and Sundays.

For further information, contact Tel: +66 (0)81 377 6511.

Transport Connections:
Car: Take Highway 3 from Bangkok to Klang district in Rayong province before switching over to Route 3377 to Khao Chamao National Park. Drive for about 10 km along this road before turning right at the next junction. Follow the signs for the resort and continue to drive up into the hills for a distance of about 20 km.

Legend Maeklong Hotel: Riverside Locale Provides a Sublime Setting

July 19, 2010

UPDATE : 6 July 2010

Youthapong Charoenpan

During a really enjoyable two-night stay at the Legend Maeklong Hotel in Samut Songkram province recently, I couldn’t help but think of the old adage that ‘time flies when you’re having fun!’

Our soothing stay at the beautiful resort, which lies right alongside the Maeklong River, provided us with a truly memorable experience. Guests get to enjoy a real taste of the Thai way of life by the river from the resort, which is based in a colonial-style building that dates back to the era of King Mongkut (1804-1868).

Set within a small riverside village, there are two traditional Thai wooden houses and the main building within the resort’s compound, along with lots of tropical plants and flora, including various varieties of plumerias.

Exclusivity Assured
The Legend Maeklong only has 12 rooms, providing guests with a genuine sense of exclusivity. We were certainly quite satisfied with our accommodation in an Amphawa 1 Room (2,500 baht [US$77] per night), which was located in one of the wooden houses.

Our comfortable room had an ample double bed and large windows with a pleasant view of the surroundings. This class of room, which has a standard bathroom, includes a writing table, clothes horse, TV and refrigerator.

Al Fresco Riverside Dining
In front of the main building is a Thai restaurant called Ban Khun Tawee, which features a wooden terrace and several tables that boast a pleasant riverside setting. Hotel guests can make the most of a free breakfast, which includes delicious rice soup with a choice of meats.

There are several other Thai dishes on the menu and they are priced at reasonable levels for a hotel of this caliber. Another positive I ought to mention is the restaurant’s service staff, who were helpful and attentive throughout our visit.

At the end of the day, the main reason our experiences by the Maeklong River were so enjoyable were related to the high standard of the hotel and accommodation, while I would add that the hotel management’s attention to detail was also particularly impressive.

The hotel is currently offering a discount of 25% on full rates on Fridays and Saturdays, and an impressive 50% discount on weekdays (Sunday to Thursday).

For further details, or to make a reservation, call Tel: +66 (0)2 513 4913, or visit the hotel’s official website at http://www.thelegendmaeklong.com/.

Water-Borne Adventures
While there are several opportunities when it comes to exploring the area by boat, you really shouldn’t miss the night-time tour along the Maeklong River and Klong Amphawa (‘Amphawa Canal’), during which you’ll get to see literally thousands of fireflies, which tend to congregate around Lamphu trees dotted along the river bank. This three-hour trip costs 800 baht ($24).

Transport Connections:
Train: Trains depart for Mahachai station in Samut Sakhon province regularly from Wongwienyai Station, which is located about 800 meters away from the BTS station of the same name. On arrival at Mahachai, passengers need to take a short ferry ride across the river to Tha Chalom. On reaching Tha Chalom, you take a train from Banlaem Station to Maeklong Station in Samut Songkram province. The fare is free for locals, or 10 baht (US$0.30) for foreigners.

Car: From Rama II Road in Bangkok, follow signs for Highway 35 (Thon Buri-Paktor Road). Follow this road for about 60 kilometers via Samut Sakhon (Mahachai) and continue straight ahead when reaching a major intersection to Amphawa in Samut Songkram province.

When you see the Rama II Bridge, cross it and keep left for about 500 meters before taking the next U-turn, which will lead you back under the bridge. Continue straight ahead until you come to the next junction, where you will need to turn right into Banlaem Road. Continue along this road until you reach the next intersection, where you should turn right again. Drive alongside the canal for about 1 km. When you reach the next intersection (between Pratummalai Road and Chaiyaporn Road) continue straight ahead for about another 100 meters and you will see the hotel on your right-hand side.

Peak Position Perfect For a Date With Adventure

Peak Position Perfect For a Date With Adventure
UPDATE : 16 July 2010

Maneeya Dhammataree

One of the most stunning sights you’re likely to experience during a stay at Baan Pa Ngam (‘Pa Ngam Mountain Lodge’) in Prachin Buri province is a sea of early morning fog, which is a fairly common occurrence due to the mountainous terrain that surrounds the resort.

Should you also get the opportunity to stay at the resort, I would also urge you to maximize the experience by participating in as many adventurous activities organized by the resort as possible.

Spectacular Scenery
More commonly referred to by locals as Baan Pa Ngam, the resort can be reached from Bangkok by car in about two hours. The resort is fortunate in that it is located right by two of the kingdom’s most impressive national parks – Khao Yai and Thap Lan, providing it with lush, green forested areas, as well as breathtaking mountainous terrain.

The resort offers several alternatives when it comes to log cabins, ranging from in price from 1,200-2,600 baht (US$37.20-80.55) per night (based on up to two people staying per cabin). Don’t hesitate to check with the resort if you plan to visit as part of a larger group since it’s also possible that the resort can prepare a cabin for groups of between four and eight guests.

Decorated in a simple, rural style, the cabins benefit from a hilltop setting, which provides guests with some impressive views of the lush valleys of Thap Lan National Park, as well as Dong Pha Ya Yen, an area of rain forest located within Khao Yai National Park.

Clean And Fresh Air
The area surrounding the resort possesses the country’s highest concentration of fresh air and the seventh best ozone source on the planet, according to owner Nakorn Wudhikanakorn.

Although my visit took place during the summer months (March to June), the temperature was still extremely mild, so I didn’t even need to turn on the air conditioner. Nevertheless, the best time to visit is said to be during the rainy season (July-October), when the forested areas are extremely fertile and at their most beautiful.

A Head For Heights
Baan Pa Ngam takes a rather different approach when compared with most other resorts of this type. The resort doesn’t possess a dazzling fitness center or swimming pool, sauna, or spa, opting to put the emphasis upon adventurous pursuits close to nature. Due to its mountainous surroundings, many of the activities on offer make good use of the lofty locale.

The Sky Tour (500 baht), for example, is more like a ‘cable basket’ than a cable car, but it still serves the same purpose, providing guests with a gentle introduction to the lush, tropical rain forest of Dong Pha Ya Yen.

You can enjoy a rather more exciting view by taking the High Flyer (500 baht), which allows you to get around the site by means of a system of slings and cables. The Flying Fox (150 baht) is a similar system that operates at a lower altitude and is therefore safer and more accessible for kids.

But the most challenging option would have to be the Sky Coaster (250 baht), which is almost like a ‘reverse Bungee’ or a ‘human slingshot’.

Making use of centrifugal force, the Sky Coaster sends participants up about 15 meters into the air. Although this kind of activity wouldn’t normally appeal, I can say that on this occasion it really put a smile on my face thanks to the view it provided me with of the impressive natural surroundings.

If these activities still fail to satisfy your appetite for adventure, you can always sign up for the resort’s abseiling program. This activity requires a minimum of 10 participants, however, which keeps the cost down to just 800 baht per person. This activity takes place on the cliffs surrounding the 70-m-high Weruwan Waterfall.

Those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground can head for the resort’s Mountain View restaurant instead, which provides a rather more gentle opportunity to take in the breathtaking vistas.

Hot Stuff
If you get to visit the resort on a Saturday, you’ll also get the chance to experience a special Pa Ngam Fire Extravaganza, which takes place at about 8 pm. The performance provides members of staff with the chance to say a special kind of farewell, which provides a magnificent end to the day.

For further information, or to make a reservation at Baan Pa Ngam, call Tel: +66 (0)3 728 2797.

Transport Connections:
Car: Take Highway 304 from Bangkok and continue straight ahead at the Kabinburi intersection in Prachin Buri province for another 48 kilometers. You will know you are near to your final destination once you see a sign for the resort on the right-hand side of the road.

Alternatively, take Highway 305 from Bangkok to Nakhon Nayok province before switching to Highway 33. Turn left at the Kabinburi intersection in Prachin Buri province and continue in the same direction for about 48 km. You will know you are near to your final destination once you see a sign for the resort on the right-hand side of the road.

Samut Prakan: Neighboring Temples Brimming With History
UPDATE : 28 June 2010

Nida Tunsuttiwong

When examining Samut Prakan province’s leading tourist destinations, it’s important to take a look at the temples of Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai and Wat Bang Phil Yai Klang, which are located along Nam Daeng Road in Bang Phil Yai Nai district.

Celebrating Victory
Originally called Wat Plubplachai Chansongkram (‘Pavilion for War Victory’), Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai was built during the reign of King Naresuan (1590-1605). The monarch, whose rule took place during the Ayutthaya Era (1590-1605), is widely credited with bringing to an end a period of Burmese tributary in the area.

The historic temple is widely known for its principal Buddha image of Luang Por Toh, which is said to be one of the country’s most revered images of its kind.

Legend suggests that one day, three bronze-cast Buddha images were floating along the Chao Phraya River in the direction of the Bang Pakong River. Locals made several attempts to fish them out, but they continuously failed in their efforts. Finally, some villagers from Ban Leam in Samut Songkhram province managed to pull one of the images (called Luang Por Ban Laem) to safety, while the second one – Luang Por Toh – ended up in Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai. The third statue ended its journey to the east of Bangkok in Chachoengsao province.

A Ceremonial Display
Every year, residents of Bang Phil hold a ceremony known as the Receiving Lotus Custom. A replica of Luang Por Toh is carried aboard a large boat, which then heads off on a cruise along Klong Samrong (‘Samrong Canal’). Folks line up alongside the canal and throw lotus blossoms onto the vessel as a form of offering to the statue. This ceremonial activity actually dates back to the rule of King Rama II (1809-1824).

The abbot of Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai provides visitors to the temple with fresh, clean drinking water, which is supplied for free. The temple also established some air-conditioned public toilets, which are estimated to be valued at about five million baht (US$154,226). The facility is extraordinarily clean and boasts its own garden area, including various hi-tech features, such as automatic faucets and sliding doors.

While you’re in this vicinity, don’t forget to visit Bang Phil market, which is located alongside the Samrong Canal.

Closer Investigation
Wat Bang Phil Yai Klang (‘middle’) is sited very near to Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai (‘inside’). The temple has undergone several name changes over the years. Built in 1924, the temple was originally named Wat Klang. The temple’s name was later changed to Wat Rat Satthatham and then Wat Bang Phil Yai Klang.

The temple is home to the kingdom’s largest reclining Buddha – Sakayamuni Sri Sumet – which measures 53-meters in length. In fact, the reclining Buddha is so large it plays host to a number of huge mural paintings of heaven and hell, which you can view on different floors inside the structure. On the third floor, you’ll see the image’s heart, which followers can attach golf leaf to as an form of paying homage.

Standing proudly behind the pavilion is a brand new ordination hall. I even discovered a small tunnel here that allows visitors to explore the area underneath the hall. This act is supposed to bring good fortune to the person who undertakes the short walk.

The hall also features some vivid mural paintings that depict scenes from the life of the Lord Buddha. The paintings even serve as a form of historical record in a way, since you’ll even see modern folks depicted here, such as a man wearing a T-shirt and another with dyed hair. Among these carefully composed paintings, if you look carefully, you should be able to spot within the mural a depiction of The Scream, the famous painting created by the Norwegian symbolist painter Edvard Munch in 1893.

Transport Connections:
Car: From Bangkok, take Highway 3 (Bang Na-Trad Highway) to Samut Prakan province’s Bang Phil Yai district. Once you pass Bang Phil Market for agricultural products, make a U-turn and take the route that bears to the left. Follow this road for three kilometers before turning left into Nam Daeng Road. This road will soon lead you to the temples of Wat Bang Phil Yai Klang and Wat Bang Phil Yai Nai.

Suan Tan Bung Lae: Sweet Inspiration
UPDATE : 28 June 2010

Borannaree

Ratchaburi province’s Damneonsaduak district is well known for its floating market, where local vendors gather in their boats to offer locally produced goods for sale to tourists, or exchange them for other items with fellow traders.

Located just 100 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, Damneonsaduk boasts another interesting attraction that introduces visitors to the process of collecting the juice produced by coconut trees, which is used to produce coconut sugar.

Local Expertise
Accessible via the Damneonsaduk Canal, Suan Tan Bung Lae (‘Bung Lae coconut sugar garden’) is located just a few kilometers away from the floating market and provides visitors with a rare chance to see up close how villagers produce the coconut sugar.

While there is an indoor demonstration that takes place in a building located at the front of the coconut garden, you can also arrange a demonstration outdoors that shows how the juice used to make the sugar is collected from the trees.

“If visitors would like to see this part of the process, it can easily be arranged,” says owner Pichai Mungmee, who personally hosts the demonstrations.

Pichai sets off with a long knife on his waist and a plastic bottle hung over his shoulder. He uses a bamboo ladder to climb one of the trees to replace a full bottle with an empty one, while slashing several flowers nearby so that the juices can flow more freely.

“I encourage visitors to taste it as soon as I collect it from the tree,” Pichai says, “as the taste and smell is so fresh at that point that folks really love it!”

The fresh juices are distinctly different even from the boiled juice he serves during the other demonstration indoors. The reason the fresh juice is not provided as a complimentary item for visitors is that it can spoil easily and quickly in the heat.

Established Techniques
When producing the sugar on a larger scale, Pichai employs local agricultural workers, who remove and then replace the bottles at 4 am and 3 pm.

“Our process of making coconut sugar still relies on local labor, so we can present a true picture of our local ways to visitors,” says Pichai.

Pichai said that he established the initiative to show younger generations of Thais how to produce the homemade sugar, which was a popular activity among locals right up to the 1980s.

According to Pichai, the juice collected from the trees is boiled in a large, deep pan for two hours before being simmered and then stirred for about 20 minutes on being removed from the stove, which condenses the sugar. The sticky remainder is then molded into a round chunk on a flat panel, which is left to dry and cool before being packed for sale.

Various goods produced from the sugar are for sale in the building where the indoor demonstration took place.

“I’m really proud to show visitors how we produce the sugar,” Pichai says.
On arriving at Damneonsaduak Floating Market, visitors can arrange to take this trip by boat, which as well as providing an insight into the coconut sugar production process, also offers the chance to view local life alongside the canal during the journeys to and from Suan Tan Bang Lae.

Transport Connections:
Car:
From Bangkok, head out of the city on Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road). Near the Km 80 marker, turn left into Bangpae-Damnoen Saduak Road and continue along this road for another 25 km. On arrival at Damnoen Saduak, you can hire a local boat to take you to Suan Tan Bung Lae.

Kirimontra Resort: Focused Approach Delivers ‘Total R&R’
UPDATE : 25 June 2010

Nida Tunsuttiwong

As one of the kingdom’s best known resort towns, Hua Hin offers visitors a huge variety of accommodation choices. During a recent trip, I had the chance to stay at a highly original resort called Kirimontra Resort, which also runs meditation courses for guests, providing an ideal opportunity for them to reinvigorate their minds and bodies.

Located just 20 minutes from the center of town, Kirimontra Resort occupies a 20-rai (3.2-hectare) plot that’s surrounded by impressive mountainous terrain. Designed by Dulphichai Komolvanich, the resort features contemporary Ayutthaya-style architecture. Duphichai is a native of Ayutthaya, who has designed a number of modern buildings in his historic hometown, hence the influence upon his own design work elsewhere. The resort has four villas, as well as sufficient rooms to accommodate up to 40 guests.

Ample Space
I checked into one of Kirimontra Resort’s villa properties, which includes three bedrooms, an impressive private pool, and a multi-purpose living area that comprises a living room, a dining area, along with a kitchen featuring a sizable refrigerator and lots of useful appliances.

During my stay, I got the chance to meet with two of the resort’s senior executives – Dr Glaosaung Supongthon (managing director) and Monvibha Prachankhadee (president).

According to Dr Glaosaung and Monvibha, Kirimontra Resort was originally designed as a holiday home for family members and friends to make use of. But the project was later expanded and transformed into a small resort, tailored towards the needs of guests in search of rest and relaxation.

A Chance to Unwind
Kirimontra Resort aims to help guests unwind through activities such as yoga and meditation, thus helping them to achieve a balance of the earth’s four key elements – air, earth, fire and water, according to Monvibha.

Monvibha says that on special religious holidays, such as Visakha Bucha Day and Makha Bucha Day, the resort organizes special meditation sessions.

Visakha Bucha Day, held on the day of a full moon (known as Uposatha Day) during the fifth or sixth lunar month, refers to the birth, enlightenment (nirvana), and passing away (Parinirvana) of the Lord Buddha. Makha Bucha Day, which falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month, is set aside to venerate the Lord Buddha and his teachings. The Thai word Makha refers to the third lunar month, while Bucha means ‘to honor’ or ‘to venerate’.

The special meditation sessions organized to mark such occasions are usually held late in the evening in an area on the resort’s rooftop, where a small chedi (stupa) containing Buddha relics can also be found. The resort also has its own spacious meditation room, which enjoys a warm and pleasant ambiance. The room has been carefully laid out so that natural light illuminates the room’s principal Buddha image.

Monvibha personally led the first meditation session I attended, which began by urging us to concentrate on a specific body part. We would then focus on a different body part until we had completed a full cycle and we completed three cycles in total. Monvibha then led us into a deeper form of meditation, which produced an even more profound and peaceful state of mind.

An Early Start
The next meditation session took place before dawn the next day on Hua Hin Beach. Located about 20 minutes from the resort, this session was led by Dr Glaosaung. Following the session, which helped participants reach a new level of peace and tranquility, we did some gentle stretching before having breakfast, which included a large number of different Thai desserts from well known stores in Hua Hin.

As we enjoyed our breakfast, we listened to a recording of Dr Glaosaung singing some relaxing Thai songs, such as Chok Dee Thee Mee Nai Luang (‘We’re Lucky to Have the King’). Played as part of the official celebrations for the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s coronation, Dr Glaosaung was particularly proud of being able to sing this patriotic composition. To learn more about the song, visit the website http://promothaieducation.org.

Transport Connections:
Car: From Bangkok, take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) towards Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. When you see the road divide into two directions, keep in the right-hand lane and then turn right when you reach Soi Hua Hin 156. Kirimontra Resort is located about 500 meters inside the soi – you’ll see it on the right-hand side of the road.

Phetchaburi: Wat Mahathat Worawiharn’s Inspiring Spires

Phetchaburi: Wat Mahathat Worawiharn’s Inspiring Spires
UPDATE : 6 May 2010

Nida Tunsuttiwong

Located about 160 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, Phetchaburi province’s best known attractions are Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park and the coastal town of Cha-am. But few visitors are aware that the province’s main town is also home to the ancient temple of Wat Mahathat Worawiharn.

While there are no written records to confirm the precise date of the temple’s establishment, bones and other items discovered on the site suggest it was built between the Dvaravati period (500-1200) and the Sukhothai period (1238-1438). In 1916, King Rama VI promoted Wat Mahathat Worawiharn to the Worawihan class of Royal temple.

Architectural Flair
The temple’s most outstanding architectural feature is its intricately carved Phra Prang Ha Yod (‘Five Peak Prang [Spire]‘), which is formally known as Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat. The tallest spire reaches a height of about 54 meters, while each of the spires contains important Buddha relics. The spires are surrounded by a viharn kod (a kind of gallery with a roof) and 193 Buddha images. Most of these Buddha images take the form of the late Ayutthaya architectural style.

The spires have undergone five major renovations, with the first one taking place in 1814.

During one renovation, ancient silver and gold Buddha statues were discovered, along with Buddha relics stored inside. To access the spires and the gallery, visitors need to walk through a hall called Viharn Luang, which was constructed during the reign of Somdet Phra Chaoyuhua Boromakot (1732-1758) towards the end of Ayutthaya period (1351-1767).

The hall features mural paintings that recount certain periods of the life of the Lord Buddha.

The incredibly-detailed main Buddha statue is dressed in an ancient Royal costume, including decorative items, such as a necklace and crown.

Nearby is the ordination hall and a small pavilion known as Viharn Noi (‘the small hall’). In here sits a large Buddha image called Luang Por U-Thong.

Another architectural feature that makes this temple stand out from many others is the white stucco that adorns the Luang and Noi viharns. The stucco that decorates the doors, windows and roofs was originally formed into the shapes of angels or demons, along with some characters from the epic poem Phra Aphai Mani, penned by Sunthorn Phu, Thailand’s best known poet.

Visitors can also visit the temple’s museum, where many ancient Buddha images, artifacts and examples of porcelain are on display.

Wat Mahathat opens daily from 7 am to 9 pm.

Transport Connections:
Car:
Route One
From Bangkok, take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) all the way to Phetchaburi province’s Muang district. Keep left when you pass through the downtown area and turn left in front of Phetcharat Hospital. Follow Bandai-It Road until you reach a T-junction, where you should turn left. You will see the temple on your left.

Route Two
From Bangkok, take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) all the way to Phetchaburi province’s Muang district. Highway 4 then divides. If you bear right, you’ll head towards Hua Hin, so continue straight ahead, which will lead you into the province’s main downtown area. Make a right turn at Khiriratthaya Road and head towards a T-junction. Turn left here in the direction of Bandai-It Road. On arrival at the next T-junction, turn left into Damnoen Kasem Road. You’ll soon see the temple on your left.

Minibar Royale: Metropolitan Finesse

June 23, 2010
Minibar Royale: Metropolitan Finesse
UPDATE : 22 June 2010

Youthapong Charoenpan

Since both sides of Bangkok’s busy Sukhumvit Road offer attractive locations for businesses looking to set up a flagship bar, club or restaurant, there seems to be a virtually constant supply of new outlets opening up along the capital’s principal thoroughfare.

Minibar Royale is an über trendy bar and restaurant, established by a group of close friends who once lived together in New York City, who aim to provide their customers with a friendly ‘home from home’-style atmosphere.

‘No Fuss, Just Chill’
Since opening its doors to the public almost two years ago, Minibar Royale has been busy establishing its concept of ‘No Fuss, Just Chill’ in the form of a trendy French brasserie with a New York-style ambiance. In terms of what’s on offer at Minibar Royale in terms of dining and refreshment, the management is looking to provide tasty French delicacies and enjoyable drinks in a New York-style setting.

In terms of the actual fare, the management concedes that the menu is extremely varied, fashioned after hip cafés and bistros you’ll find in Paris and New York. In short, you’ll find popular French and American dishes, or even a combination of the two, such as a big, juicy beef burger served with a French-style salad (190 baht [US$6]).

Carefully Prepared
I decided to accept a recommendation and ordered a plate of Seafood Angel Hair Pasta with White Wine sauce, which was totally delicious.

The al dente pasta went very nicely with the perfectly blended sauce, while the flavorful prawns and squid were just the right consistency.

My dining companion ordered a Cold Cut Open-Faced Sandwich, which comprises a single slice of bread with what would otherwise be considered fillings placed on top.

I tried a little bit of this dish and was particularly impressed by the tenderness and juiciness of the grilled parma ham. The healthy-tasting multigrain bread was also enjoyable and featured a rather pleasant nutty taste. My friend certainly wasted little time in demolishing this dish.

Sweet Stuff
As a big fan of Tiramisu, I decided to try a portion of Minibar Royale’s Brandy Tiramisu. The brandy-laced coffee used to prepare this dish had an utterly delectable aroma, while the chef blended this expertly with the Mascaponae cheese, managing to fully exceed my already fairly high expectations.

Minibar Royal opens daily from 6.30 am to midnight. Lunch or dinner can be ordered from 10.30 am to midnight.

Hotel guests are served a continental buffet breakfast from 6.30 am to 10.30 am, while brunch is available from Monday through Friday from 10.30 am to 2 pm and from 10.30 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
Dishes at Minibar Royal start from about 120 baht (US$4).

Groups Gratefully Received: Minibar Royale is able to accommodate groups of up to 150 guests, while a private room offers an ideal option for smaller groups of between 10-20 people. Reservations can be made up to 15 days in advance of a planned visit.

For further information, or to make a reservation at Minibar Royale, call Tel: +66 (0)2 261 5533, or +66 (0)81 916 0100.

Transport Connections:
Minibar Royale is located at 37/7 Citadines Bangkok Hotel, Sukhumvit 23.

Train: The easiest way to reach Minibar Royale is to take the BTS skytrain to Asok, or the MRT subway to Sukhumvit and take a taxi or motorcycle taxi to Sukhumvit Soi 23. Minibar Royale is located on the left-hand side of the street.

Kanokrat Resort: Canalside Setting Offers Easy Access to Amphawa
UPDATE : 2 June 2010

Kinnareemas

Kanokrat Resort is a contemporary, Balinese-style resort located just a short distance away from the famous Amphawa Floating Market in Samut Songkhram province. The resort enjoys a tranquil setting alongside Klong Pheelork (‘Pheelork Canal’), which connects it with Klong Amphawa, just a few kilometers downstream.

There are two distinct areas to choose from when booking a stay at Kanokrat Resort.

While you can enjoy a spectacular view of the canal from the courtyard at the front of the resort and from the dining area, all rooms in the main building boast floor-to-ceiling windows, providing a pleasant view of the surrounding gardens. All the rooms here also feature a balcony, featuring wooden flooring and seats, which combine well with the lush green surroundings.

Cute Little Cottages
The resort also includes three semi-detached wooden cottages, which each include an individual entrance and balcony area. The room areas feature a contemporary form of Balinese décor, which includes an interesting color combination of off white and a bold green color in this case. Two of the cottages feature a single bedroom, while the other four have twin beds. Some also have an outdoor bathroom area, featuring plain concrete, bricks and bamboo.

On the other side of the garden are two, two-story row houses, which between them account for 16 rooms in total. The rooms on the second floor have a single bed and a balcony overlooking the surrounding garden area. The rooms on the first floor include twin beds, while four of these rooms can accommodate up to five twin beds on request, if required. It should be noted that this arrangement involves an additional charge.

All Mod Cons
All rooms include an air-conditioner, satellite television, a fridge, a shower system with hot and cold taps and Wi-Fi Internet access.

All rooms are charged at the same rate and include breakfast. From Sunday through Thursday, you pay 950 baht (US$29), while the rate rises to 1,250 baht on a Friday and 1,500 baht on a Saturday.

Groups Welcomed
Kanokrat Resort is also able to accommodate corporate groups, boasting an air-conditioned meeting hall which can accommodate up to 80 participants.

For further information, or to make a reservation, contact Tel: +66 (0)83 244 8000. Please note that a stay on a Friday or Saturday night requires a booking one month in advance.

Transport Connections:
Kanokrat Resort is located at 50/5 Moo 6 Soi Baanprok 41.

Bus: Regular buses run to Samut Songkhram from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) in Thon Buri. On arriving in Samut Songkhram, you can hire a local taxi to take you to the resort.

Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa: A Stellar Setting That’s Second to None
UPDATE : 14 June 2010

Maneeya Dhammataree

“The world is mine,” I thought to myself as I enjoyed a splendid view of Chang Lang Beach from the balcony of a suite at Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa.

Set on a sizable plot of land in Trang province’s Si Kao district, the resort benefits from a stellar setting, topped by a beach of white, powdery sand and the warm waters of the Andaman Sea. Rows of palm trees and conifers provide a dramatic background and the vista tends to be particularly enjoyable at sunrise and sunset.

A ‘Home From Home’
Featuring contemporary Thai architectural styles and a serene, natural setting, the accommodation at Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa provides guests with a homey ambiance.

Basically, there are two main categories of accommodation – rooms and suites, which can also be sub-divided into six types. Guests can choose whether they want a balcony with a view of the ocean and trees (defined as a Sea View), or a view of the ocean and nearby islands (defined as an Ocean Front View). Since guests are provided with sun loungers and other furniture, the balcony is an ideal place to dine in private.

Family Fun
Families considering a visit to the Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa may wish to consider booking a Family Pool Terrace (about 20,000 baht ++ [US$588] per night). Although the suites are based on the ground floor, the surrounding gardens have been cleverly landscaped to ensure a good deal of privacy.

Featuring two adjacent deluxe rooms, a Family Pool Terrace allows the adult members of a group to be located right next door to any accompanying children, offering a good deal of convenience. The kids might want to enjoy a refreshing dip in the private pool, which features Jacuzzi jets, while the adults do some sunbathing on the nearby terrace.

If you’re traveling alone, with friends, or as part of a couple, a Deluxe Garden Terrace (7,000 baht per night) would best satisfy your requirements. While the view and ambiance are similar to those of a Family Pool Terrace, a Deluxe Garden Terrace does not have its own private pool. This is not a major problem, however, since you can easily reach the main pool area on the other side of the property on foot in a matter of minutes. This pool also features a mini bar.

Sweet Music
An Anantara Suite (20,000 baht per night) is a perfect choice for honeymooners. A sofa bed, featuring a mosquito net, located in the living room provides a romantic, almost exotic feel. This luxurious suite also features an oversized tub, a separate shower and a private dressing room.

But the area of the resort that impressed me most during my recent visit is called Beach House. Based on the concept of a ‘Daybed Boat’, the Beach House includes an outdoor living space that features several styles of sofa and comfy cushions, including one shaped like a row boat. There are plenty of bookshelves provided here, too, packed with a good supply of novels and other publications.

Tastebud Titillation
Titillate your taste buds by visiting one of Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa’s range of restaurants. Among the options available are Leelawadee, an open-air restaurant that serves both local and international dishes, as well as Acqua, which serves Italian fare. Acqua is located right about Beach House and boasts a sweeping view of the ocean thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows.

There are plenty of activities for guests who prefer to keep active. You might like the idea of exploring the area around the hotel by bike, or prefer to head straight for the health and fitness club. Various water sports are also available, such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling or windsurfing. The resort also offers some programs that allow guests to learn more about Thai culture, including cookery and weaving classes.

Guests who are dedicated to ensuring their stay involves plenty of rest and relaxation ought to head for the property’s spa, where you can choose from a comprehensive range of massage and treatment options.

For further information, or to make a reservation call Tel: +66 (0)75 205 888.

Transport Connections:
Anantara Si Koa Resort & Spa is about one-hour’s drive from Krabi International Airport.

Air: Thai Airways (Tel: +66 [0]2 356 1111) operates a service between Bangkok and Krabi. You can choose from early morning and evening departures from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, or a mid-afternoon flight from Don Muang.

Thai Air Asia also operates morning and afternoon flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
